The Realme GT Master Edition is the company's most recent flagship smartphone that carries a price tag of Rs Rs 27,999. The flagship combines a Snapdragon 778G processor with an extended RAM of 8GB+3GB. Here is our detailed review of the smartphone.

Realme GT Master Edition: Design and display

The highlight of the Realme Master Edition

's design is the back of the phone that is made of "100% ethically sourced vegan leather" as per the company and sports a horizontal grid in an undulating manner. The grid makes for three broad strips below the rear camera setup and a small one beside it. All the strips are slightly raised from the surface, which makes the remaining part seem a bit low, thus giving it a wavy texture, with the strips acting as crests and the rest part as troughs. Well, sort of, for lack of a better analogy. The "vegan leather" used for the back has a matte finish throughout and has a bit rugged look. It is almost completely resistant to fingerprints and smudges. Your fingers and palm might leave sweat marks at the back of the phone but they won't show at all.

There is a triple rear camera setup enclosed in a rectangular enclosure made of transparent toughened glass at the left of the phone's back; the setup juts out by about one mm from the body and does not give it a bulky look. It also makes for the phone to lie flat at a surface and not wobble when pressed at the corners. The phone won't slip from a table surface either.

The device comes in a curved display which has very thin bezels on the sides. The right edge of the device carries the power button.

The left edge left carries a dual SIM card slot and the volume buttons.

There are two microphone vents, one at the top and the other at the bottom edge. The bottom edge has also got a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C charging port and speaker vents.

The device features a 6.43-inch Super AMOLED display, a maximum screen refresh rate of 120Hz and a 91.7% screen-to-body ratio. It has a touch sampling rate of 360Hz and a peak brightness of 1000nits. The app icons look sharp and there is an option to automatically switch between light and dark modes. The automatic brightness feature works fine.

You can set the screen refresh rate to 60Hz to save power (the Standard mode) or at High, which is not exactly a 120Hz refresh rate option but can stretch to 120Hz as and when required. Thus, Realme has given three options in case you want to switch the refresh rates: Standard, High and Auto Select. There are no clear options for 90Hz or 120Hz.

Realme GT Master Edition: Performance

The Realme GT Master Edition comes powered with a Snapdragon 778G processor and runs Realme UI 2.0 based on Android 11. It has 8GB + 3GB of total RAM, the 3GB coming from the ROM side. The ROM is 128GB.

The GT Master Edition comes with a lot of bloatware and unnecessary apps which can be uninstalled. At a high refresh rate, you will have a smoother scrolling experience and yes, better gaming, as compared to the 60Hz one. The phone apps open and close instantaneously irrespective of the refresh rates you choose and swiping and navigating through them is easy. The UI, despite having the extra apps, has a clean look and the icons are spread out evenly, without giving you a sense of clutter.

The face unlock feature worked well in both lighted and dimly lit environments, but it does not in very or totally dark settings, like in areas of home about some metres away from the lighted rooms at night.

Coming to the gaming experience, we played Call of Duty: Mobile by first setting both the Graphics Quality and Frame Rate at 'Very High' first, and found the gameplay to be mostly fluid, though it did feel like the player movement and quickly turning to one side were not fast enough in some frames. At this setting, the game can get slightly sluggish and the smoothness of movements while rushing for cover and locking your weapon sights on an opponent is not up to the mark. However, if you reduce the Graphics Quality to 'High' and keep the other as it is, you may notice an improvement in the gameplay and it becomes smoother. The frame rates can even be kicked up to 'Max' if you want. Also worth noting is that we were playing the game with the 'Pro Gamer' mode turned on, which, as per Realme, will eat up the battery faster and also cause the device to heat up. The battery levels surely dropped more than they did in the Balanced and the Low Power modes (the other two modes), but the device did not get heated up after about an hour of gaming; the back got slightly warm, that's all.

Realme GT Master Edition: Camera

The camera shots we took during both day and night came out to be well-detailed, natural and mostly sharp.

There is no blurriness at all in the shots and the night shots have improved a lot, especially the ones taken with a light source close by, compared to some of the earlier models by the company.

The portrait mode also gave some clear shots, making the object stand out clearly in the blurry surroundings. The night mode does make the captured scene a bit brighter and you can see a slight intrusion of colour there, but the clarity and the sharpness in the shot is retained.

Realme GT Master Edition: Battery

From zero battery level, the phone charged to 54% within 18 minutes of putting it on the charge which sits close to Realme's claim of the GT Master Edition charging to 50% in 13 minutes. In the next 10 minutes, the battery levels stood at 88%, which is an increase of 34% and the device got charged to full in the next 7 minutes, thus taking roughly 35 minutes to charge to full from zero battery levels, which sure is impressive for a battery capacity of 4300mAh. We charged the phone using the 65W power adapter that comes in the box.

For light to medium users who seldom game or do not and view high-quality content sparingly, the battery will last for two days easily. For power users, gaming enthusiasts and people who love to capture videos, the phone will still have enough juice to go for more than a day. The fast charging makes it convenient to take the phone to a grind during gaming sessions and content consumption.

Verdict

The Realme GT Master Edition is probably the most unique-looking Android flagship right now, with the vegan leather inclusion in the design. The build quality is tough and the phone feels light in the hands. It is fast enough and manages operations speedily and smoothly. The camera on this device is quite good, both day and night, and gives clear, detailed and natural shots. Night photography used to be the Achilles heel of Realme devices but with the GT Master Edition, it has highly improved. The battery life is also long, lasting for around two days on average.

Gaming-wise, our experience with the phone was a bit mixed, maybe due to the Snapdragon 778G, which will allow you to game well at medium settings with titles like Call of Duty: Mobile but not so smoothly at high settings. So, gaming-wise, the GT Master Edition is close but no cigar.

Overall, if gaming is not very high on your priority and you want a flagship that looks a bit different than the rest, the Realme GT Master Edition is worthy enough in all the other segments to warrant a buy.
